Jameh Mosque of Yazd

The tallest portal minarets in Iran

Rising above the mud-brick lanes of the old city, the Jameh Mosque of Yazd announces itself with a soaring tiled portal flanked by twin minarets more than 50 metres high — the tallest of their kind in Iran. The mosque was built mainly in the 14th century on the site of an earlier one, and it stands at the heart of the Historic City of Yazd, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.

Inside, a long courtyard leads to a sanctuary crowned by a dome covered in turquoise and blue tile mosaic. Beneath it, the mihrab glows with some of the finest 14th-century faience in the country. The mosque is still the city’s main place of Friday prayer, and at night the illuminated portal is one of Yazd’s most magical sights.
