On the south-eastern edge of Tabriz lies El Goli — “the people’s lake”, also known as Shah Goli. A large square reservoir, created centuries ago to irrigate the surrounding orchards, is framed by terraced gardens rising up the hillside. In the middle of the water stands a graceful pavilion, reached by a causeway.
The pavilion was rebuilt in the 20th century in Qajar style and today houses a restaurant. In the evening, the whole park fills with families, joggers and friends sharing tea and sunflower seeds, while the lit-up pavilion reflects in the water. It is a relaxed way to see everyday life in Tabriz.
