For centuries Tabriz was one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road, and its bazaar shows it. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, the Historic Bazaar Complex is a vast network of interconnected brick lanes, domed halls (timcheh) and caravanserais, still fully in use by local merchants. Most of today’s structure was rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1780.
The carpet halls are the highlight: piles of hand-knotted Tabriz rugs in high, vaulted rooms where dealers sip tea and unroll their best pieces. Look up in the Timcheh Mozaffarieh and the Amir caravanserai to admire the brick domes, then wander through the lanes of spices, dried fruit, gold and leather.
